WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Co-Chairs of the Congressional Artificial Intelligence Caucus, Representatives Jerry McNerney (D-CA) and Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH) announced that Representatives Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA) and Michael T. McCaul (R-TX) will join Caucus leadership as Vice Chairs.
With this expanded leadership team, the Caucus will kick off an ongoing core initiative, the AI Across America project, to support efforts in the public and private sector to make AI education, training, and R&D available for communities across the country.
The Caucus will bring together a group of experts spanning relevant disciplines, geographical regions, and socioeconomic backgrounds for a series of forums working in conjunction with SeedAI, a nonprofit policy organization. After an initial exploratory period, the Co-Chairs and Vice Chairs will announce lines of effort and potential outputs for this Congress.
“If we want to compete on the world stage, we have to be competitive across the United States first. As the public and private sectors work to invest in AI, The Congressional AI Caucus is uniquely positioned to convene stakeholders from Congressional districts across the country to educate our colleagues, support federal and state efforts, and facilitate new opportunities at home. We have to draw from a broad set of experiences and quickly identify what’s working and what we can scale into more communities. With the support of our new Vice-Chairs, the Caucus will pave the way forward,” said the Co-Chairs.
“Bolstering our country’s AI R&D capacity and supporting the education of Americans everywhere is one of the most important steps we can take to ensure America leads the world in economic competitiveness and we protect our national security. Investing in R&D and education is also a key way to ensure that AI develops in a safe, responsible, and ethical way that benefits society. With new leadership of the Congressional AI Caucus, we will work to ensure that the American people can be confident they can work with AI, and that AI works for them,” said the Vice Chairs.
“The Congressional AI Caucus is taking on a critical mission for the public: in a recent survey commissioned by SeedAI and conducted by Morning Consult, we found Americans of all political stripes agree that the federal government should invest in diversifying the AI workforce, and bringing AI R&D and training to their communities,” said Austin Carson, Founder & President of SeedAI. “We applaud the expansion of Caucus leadership and their shared commitment to this important work. Anyone looking to make AI more representative and accessible should reach out and join the effort.”
The Congressional Artificial Intelligence Caucus was formed to inform policymakers of the technological, economic and social impacts of advances in AI and to ensure that rapid innovation in AI and related fields benefits Americans as fully as possible. The AI Caucus brings together experts from academia, government and the private sector to discuss the latest technologies and the implications and opportunities created by these new changes.
